From the Mara to Ol Pejeta, here are the Kenya safari spots we love most — with practical tips, lodges, and insider advice.

We have to start here. The Mara isn’t just Kenya’s most famous safari destination — it’s the one that tends to linger in your memory the longest. The grass moves like a green-gold sea, lions sprawl in the shade of acacias, and if you’re lucky enough to be there during migration season, the air itself seems to hum with anticipation.
The Masai Mara National Reserve is especially magical from July to October, when the Great Migration spills in from the Serengeti. For a classic stay, we love recommending Mara Serena Safari Lodge or Zebra plains Mara Camp.
If the Mara is about drama, Amboseli is about presence. Big, calm, unforgettable presence. The elephants here are some of the most iconic in Africa — huge families moving slowly across the open plains with Mount Kilimanjaro often sitting in the background.
We often suggest Amboseli & Tsavo Explorer for travelers who want a strong southern Kenya circuit.
Lake Nakuru doesn’t always get the same hype as the Mara, but it earns its place on a Kenya safari in a completely different way. The first thing you notice is the lake itself — broad, shimmering, and often alive with birds.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is one of those places we love recommending because it feels meaningful as well as exciting. You can see the usual stars — lions, buffalo, cheetahs — but you’re also visiting a conservancy with a strong conservation story.
Lake Naivasha isn’t a classic big-game destination in the same way the Mara is, but it’s one of the nicest places to slow down and breathe between game drives. We’ve always liked the feel of it — the cool breeze on the water, the call of fish eagles, the way the reeds whisper at the shoreline.
Tsavo is wild in a very honest way. Big, broad, reddish, and raw. The soil stains everything that color — your shoes, your car, sometimes even your camera bag — and somehow that’s part of the charm.
Not every safari in Kenya has to revolve around the headline parks. Some of our favorite experiences happen in the quieter, more exclusive areas around Mount Kenya and the Laikipia fringe. This is where safari gets a little more personal — walking, horseback riding, night drives in some areas, and time to notice the smaller things.
Samburu sits in northern Kenya and feels like a world apart from the southern parks. It’s hotter, drier, and more rugged, with scenery that looks carved by heat and patience.
Strictly speaking, the coast isn’t a safari destination in the usual sense. But we’d be doing you a disservice if we didn’t mention it, because one of the nicest ways to end a Kenya safari is with a few lazy days by the Indian Ocean.

For most first-time travelers, we’d start with the Masai Mara. It’s easy to understand, rich in wildlife, and consistently rewarding.
Seven to ten days is a very comfortable starting point. That gives you enough time for two to four destinations without feeling rushed.
Absolutely. Kenya has excellent value options, especially if you’re open to road safaris and mid-range camps.
Usually between July and October in the Masai Mara, though exact timing shifts each year depending on rainfall and grazing patterns.
Yes, and it’s often a brilliant idea. Kenya pairs beautifully with the Serengeti and Zanzibar, while Uganda and Rwanda add gorilla trekking to the mix.
Kenya doesn’t just hand you a safari. It gives you a series of moods. The pulse of the Mara at dawn. The hush of Amboseli when elephants move through the dust. The reflective stillness of Lake Naivasha. The raw, sun-warmed power of Tsavo.
If you’re choosing just a few destinations, start with the classics — Masai Mara, Amboseli, and one of either Nakuru or Ol Pejeta. If you have more time, add Samburu or a coast extension.
